HISTORY
" My dream is to raise the standard of care of breast cancer patients in Thailand to the highest level and to make it available to all women particularly the underprivileged "
Dr. Kris Chatamra
MBBS (London), LRCP, MRCS (England), FRCS (England), MD (London) Dr Kris has had over 30 years of experience in the field of breast cancer, as an internal examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons in England and as a senior clinician. He founded the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation in 2007, a non-profit organisation, to support the work of the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer [QSCBC].
History of the foundation
Since the official opening of the The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer [ QSCBC] by Her Majesty, under the auspices of the Thai Red Cross Society, Chulalongkorn Hospital and Medical School in 2005, this specialist ‘one stop’ facility, for both in and out patients, has continued to build up the most sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in the region, on par with facilities internationally. From the outset the QSCBC has adopted pioneering approaches to breast cancer, including breast conservation whenever possible; a multidisciplinary approach to patient care; relevant research trials for SE Asian patients; as well as specialist post-graduate training for the medical and nursing teams internationally. The QSCBC has been created solely on donated funds.
Two patient volunteer groups were started by the QSCBC and are run by Thai and international volunteers and breast cancer survivors. The groups offer emotional support and practical help with free bras, including a post mastectomy bra designed by the QSCBC surgical team; wigs and bespoke prostheses if needed. ‘Bangkok Breast Cancer Support’ and ‘Friends Helping Friends’
The QSCBC Foundation was set up in 2007 to support the projects of the QSCBC [charity no 766] and is also under Royal Patronage.
